#RiseUpOctober: Engage and Build the Archive

The Initiative for Digital Humanities, Media, and Culture, the Office of Instructional and Research Computing, and the Interface Ecology Lab at Texas A&M University will be hosting an event on October 24th, 2015 to collect live-streaming data from the RiseUp! October march against mass incarceration in New York City (riseupoctober.nationbuilder.com/riseupoctober_protest).

 

We will be setting up several stations in our IDHMC offices. The first station will be in the Humanities Visualization Space (a wall of 3x5, 17-inch screens), where we will stream as many social media outlets as possible (following hashtags such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) to capture and discuss in real time the events of the march. The other stations will be set up to allow participants from our TAMU and local community to collect and engage directly with the event as it happens (by pulling in social media items and other contextual research that may help form a narrative or perspective) via software developed by the TAMU Interface Ecology Lab: IdeaMache (ideamache.ecologylab.net).

 

We also plan to collect data from social media to use in a hackfest later this year, in which participants will be able to access a more complete archive of the event as seen through social media and use software such as IdeaMache and Scalar to answer questions about the importance of social media in the organization of contemporary social movements, form narratives exploring several perspectives on the #stopmassincarceration, #riseupoctober, and other current socio-political events, etc. This later event will finish the work started by our participants on October 24th.
